I have 16" rims and tires on my car but my speedo reads the same as when I had my stock setup. It has always read about 3-5 pmh faster than I was going.

I have stock 14" alloy wheels on my Aveo and find that the speedometer reads 2-3 miles faster than I am going. I use my GPS as a standard and it is always 2-3 miles per hour slower than speedometer.

I dissagree! I have 17" rims and was bein an idiot the other night! I was racing on I480 in ohio was holding ad a speedo speed of 115 mph and then dude got off the freeway but i staied on it to see if i could go faster. Before i know it there is head lights rolling up on me real fast. I was in the fast lane so i figured if i got over and so did this approching car it was a cop, but if i got over and they didnt it wasnt. Sure enugh i got over and so did he, i imediatly pulled to the burm and then he hit his lights. I was going in my pants. He comes up to the car and doesnt say a word just stares at me. I look up and was like "Ill tell you right now i was being a complete idiot" His replay was, "**** Right you were, I clocked you at 115 and thought that I wasnt going to catch you. My dad is a cop and I have a badge so it was kinda all good, no ticket just a verbal lashing and the chance that if i get cought again he would drag me out of the car and beat my butt. so any way. I was doing 115mph and he clocked me at 115! explain that **** Edit please watch the language, we have filters for a reason***

so the top speed becomes lower, acceleration get worse, what the hell is the point of geting biger rimz?
also we have 14" rims with out 60 wall tires, what if i would get light weight 16x7.5 with some low-pro tires, would that increace the wheel size as a hole (rimz and tires) by alot? will my acceleration slow down?

Denis, total diameter or circumference of the tire is the real deciding factor. Imagine a 14 inch rim with super low profile tires. This is going to net you faster acceleration but overall lower top end speed because you will eventually hit the rev limiter in 5th (not likely) sooner. Now imagine you have 20 inch rims with 80 series tires (like an SUV). Your car is a slug off the line but your top end (mph) will be higher. Pretty simple picture and perhaps an oversimplification but you get the picture. Basically it is like changing your gear ratio. Also will affect fuel economy. Of course you also have the width of the rims which won't affect speed (except in the turns ) Skinny wheels - Poorer handling better MPG Wide tires - better handling, poorer fuel economy. My choice will be to get 15x7 if I decide to switch. Probably some used Honda rims from someone going to 17". Also will look to offset outward.

the offset is 40mm and any rim that fits on a civic will fit on the aveo, trust me i know. I have some honda tuner friends that were totaly impressed with the aveo, not at first but one i took them for a spin they loved it and i even let one of my better friends drive it and he loved it

Bloochevwoolet is right. It is the final circumference that matters not the size of the rims.
You can use rims up to 19" for all I care but when fitted with the correctly sized tire/profile, the final circumference should be more or less the same.
For example, I use 15" rims and I do like lower profile tires. So the correctly sized tires I use are 195/50/15.
The contact patch is more or less the same actually but what you are concerned about is sidewall compression. Lower profile tires are more resistant to this.
Also, bigger tires = more $$$$. Where I live, anything 16" and above rises astronomically. Furthermore it is very difficult to find 195/45/16 or 205/40/16 tires locally.

my 04 aveo is all stock for now and i ve hit 200km no problem no tweaking at all. and yes if you go bigger you will go faster speedo lies.. for example my 87 cutless supream stock had 14" rimz im running 15" and i was doing about 120km and my wife said she was doing over 130km and could not touch me so it makes a big differents in size. smaller is slower bigger is faster . i like the aveo its a poor man mini and a 95 hp less but lets see what we can do with them.

Bottom line: Your rim+tire diameter is the final gear. The bigger the diameter, the wider the overall gear ratio of your drivetrain, allowing for a higher top speed (mechanically, not meaning your car will be able to overcome the forces of drag to reach this) and reducing your acceleration. The smaller the diameter, the lower your top speed will be, but your acceleration will improve.

you will definately notice the difference with 17" rims even with a 205/40/17. Not only that but your ride will be fairly hard over bumps. If I had 17's I wouldget 215/45/17, this way you fill the wheel wells better and have a less harsh ride, not to mention look better and provide better cushioning for your nice rims. As for the speedo even with my 215/35/18's there isn't much error. If you want a good calculator that let's you know everything, go to neons.org. I don't worry about losing to any car in our class, this is the only one that won't govern out. It's got lots of top end potential, that's what I'm after. I just want it to do 240, which isn't to unrealistic. I can't wait.
