The Barina SRi that is pictured is from the 2001-2005 series. That one is based off of an Opel Corsa design and is built in Spain of all places.
The new 2006 Barina is the one based off of the Daewoo Kalos/Chevrolet Aveo. As good as the European Barina was, it was very expensive and Holden couldn't compete against the Accent, Yaris, and Rio in the Australian economy car market. The new Barina (Aveo) has an incredible price of $12,999 with MP3 and power windows standard.
The Barina has always been an orphan child in the Holden lineup. It was introduced in 1985 as a rebadged Suzuki Swift (Chevy Sprint) and was redesigned in 1989 as a copy of the Geo Metro here (also a rebadged Swift), and then in 1994 switched to an Opel design. The 1994-2000 series was very trouble-prone and unreliable.
Nevertheless, the Barina is the third most recognised Holden nameplate (behind Monaro and Commodore) and many Australians know it as the "Beep Beep Barina!" (this stems from the original ads in 1985 with a Barina racing the roadrunner from the WB cartoons, beep beep!)
