I want to purchase a set of 16" aftermarket rims for my 2008 hatchback. How difficult is it to correct speedometer so it reads correctly for the new rims. I currently have 14" stock wheels.

You can't do anything to the speedo unless you hack the ECU. Changing rims doesn't change anything so long as you keep the tire diameters the same.
Stock is 185/65R14... you can go, say, 195/50R16, 205/45R16 or even 215/45R16.
Don't forget you also need to optimize the rim offset to prevent tire rub.

you could have the speedo recalibrated for the change on the rims and tires, but the dealer will charge you for it. ($130), you should look into calibrating the supend' :ooffset & in/out toe, because you may get faster tire wear if this isn't corrected..
