no you dont, the chrome piece below the rubber shifter head or whatever, just unscrew that chrome piece before the shaft. It takes a lot of power to first get it off, but once you screw it off, you can sort of wiggle the rubber part off.

I just removed my knob in two minutes. Just use a bench vice and some vice grips and twist.

this is wonderful info ... but, before i go boiling my car parts ... any idea if an el'cheapo universal knob will fit???

i unscrewed the bottom chrome piece as it does and just used some upward pulling force and it popped right off all clean and easy, i have an '06 automatic trans.

yo....i boiled it and then used robogrips to get it off..its a Cajun Food but it will come off

yes it will...i have a APC carbon fiber knob on my 5 speed as of right now...its cheap but it looks pretty good.
