Gas is a good thing to use, i had some cheap stickers on my car and when i tried removing them the glue kinda stuck on the body, nothing i had would take it off but when i tried gas... well lets just say i didnt rub very long. Rewash the surface afterwards if you use gas (or paint thinner too like Sam said), its pretty strong on paint

LOL Dan....
they actually seel bug and tar remover at the auto parts store...but make sure you wax where ever you take tar off...
Something I do annually when my truck, and now car, is due for a good clean and wax.......wash your car with a dish soap mixture, get all the tar off using whatever method you choose, then wax the vehicle...the dish soap will strip any wax and hopefully the tar as well...good luck

The WD 40 trick is good but that, gas, thinner, or any solvent you use. You will need to wax it, not just if you use bug and tar remover. But that will work too. I used to use wd-40 on my chrome bikes to get tar and glue off.
