How would this benefit it? Is it for the 5 speed or auto tranny?

How would this benefit it? Is it for the 5 speed or auto tranny? It's a limited slip differential. A differential is used to allow two wheels on the same axis to spin at different speeds. As we all know, energy will always take the path of least resistance. A regular differential doesn't compensate for this, so if one drive wheel loses traction, all the energy sent through the drivetrain will be sent to this wheel, since it exhibits the least amount of resistance. A limited slip differential will detect wheelspin and will "lock" at a predefined point, keeping the energy split between the two axis. The effects on the cornering habits of a car are greatly changed with the use of these. There are a couple types of LSDs. Some will only come into affect under acceleration, others will come into affect under acceleration and to a point deceleration. Full blow race/rally LSDs will come into affect under acceleration and deceleration (to it's full degree) The idea is, that with a strong affect under acceleration, you're able to accelerate faster out of a corner. Normally, accelerating too hard out of a corner would cause the inside drivewheel to spin, since the differential is sending all the power to this wheel, you accelerate slower. With an LSD the power is distributed more evenly, allowing more power to get to the ground (though this also causes the car to understeer, or oversteer depending on if it's FWD or RWD). The affects under deceleration are somewhat more difficult to explain... as I've never had the priveledge to drive a fullblow race or rally car, I'm not going to comment on it.

A lot. A peloquin LSD for my jetta is about $825. Since you have to pull apart the transmission, throw in a gasket kit ($50)... plus labor... and it's a fortune if you don't race or rally.

Someone on the daewoo forum was saying about 1k maybe lower or higher, but if your gonna build your car it's worth it. on the Aveo I do believe the diff can be dropped with the tranny still in. my step brother who is a mechanic was looking at mine. yank out the axles and there is a cover for the diff. should just unbolt and drop out. But I have never taken one of these trannys apart so I don't know.

along with the majority of the transmission fluid, probably... I'm sure there's a gasket or two to replace in the process.
$1k is really a bit much for a street machine. Though if you're a regular at track day, definitely a worthy investment.

the 5 speed doens't have transmission fluid, it has gear oil should cost more than $15 for all the oil you need. gasket $10. I just posted it for people who want to really build there Aveo.

there are a lot of LSDs that work with automatics, why wouldnt this one work with the aveo auto? my only guess is it would break that tranny because of a load transfer or something

different design in internals. plus FWD auto trannys usally can't handle extreme power that would require a LSD

Hmmm..... for some reason I didn't notice this on daewootech..... the limited slip we were talking about over there was the Quaife Torque Biasing Differencial.
I originally got a price of around $1100 but that was a year and a bit ago..... I think Chip (rally engineer dude) was going to sell them for around $1500.... which isn't a bad price considering it's a helical gear type differencial instead of a cheap plate type.
I know there is a guy who makes plate type LSD's for the Sunbird GT Turbo crowd... I guess they work pretty good and he's willing to make one for the D16/D20 if someone sends him a stock unit ( which I have )
I think he was quoting prices down in the $325 USD range..... and he's from the USA so shipping is cheap.
