alright i was wondering if we have a f16 or d16 transmission? and does anyone know what transmission a forenza has...i believe it is the stronger f20 or d20....aand i was just reading and i found this...."The F16 in Tom's (360dynamics) project car was capable of handling his 2.0L turbo engine up to about 190hp (at the wheels) and 240lbft of torque"...does that mean thats all the f16 can handle?

A greater number doesn't always mean stronger. I'd be more worried about the drive axles, anyways...
As for tom's car... no idea, but I'm sure it'll be fine, just don't fly into the revlimiter... I've seen a couple people take out a few teeth doing that on VWs... morons.

Yea if the aveo was a new golf gti lol.....nobody makes anything for the aveo yet, and i dont think paddle shifting would be high on the scale of thing to produce for the aveo. I mean you might be able to steal one from another car and get some major custom work done to get it to work

sorry to rain on the parade but we couldnt even get a group buy on strut bars and tie bars....i dont think there will be enough people on here who will want a paddle shifter system....i guess it cant hurt to try but im just trying to warn you not to get your hopes up anyway back to what I asked in the beginning....is the f20/d20 stronger than ours?

First find out how much it would be for a one person unit (in case a group buy wont go through). Then find out per person in a group

no point in modifying an automatic transmission any way.....wont hold together with any power over 200 hp....i would say do a auto to manual swap instead of paddle shifting Yes that is true, I think we all know that 200+hp is beyond the transmissions current range but I personally think that getting paddle shifting might be cheaper then an auto to manual swap, but that is just my opinion. And who knows after the transmission is done someone might decide to come up with a shift kit, who knows where it could lead...think outside of the limits of the current technology....

"manually" shifting is pointless is an automatic, though. Every automatic I've driven won't upshift if you open the throttle enough. Most even have a "kickdown button." Tap the pedal to the floor quickly and it'll downshift. The only time I could see having the shifter in something besides D is if you're climbing a rediculous steep hill, or you DON'T want the car to downshift to first (trying to climb a steep hill in slippery conditions).
The paddle shifter you're talking about on the GTI isn't just a standard automatic either, think more "semi-automatic". It's a DSG system (can't recall what it stands for at the moment, but google would easily reveal it). DSG is a dual clutch setup with a computer that automatically controls the clutch. One clutch will have gears 1, 3, and 5 on the shaft, while the other has 2 and 4 (if it's a 6spd, it would also include 6th).
Basically one clutch is engaged at all times, while the other isn't. When shift from first to second, clutch1 disengages just as clutch2 engages. All computer controlled.
Other than weight and fun factor (I enjoy manually working the clutch), DSG has some major advantages over your standard manual and automatic transmissions. The biggest being no torque converter to make the acceleration feel mushy. The second is shift time. It shifts faster than any human possibly could.

anyone have any idea of how much an automatic to manual swap would be? The cost of the tranny, shift linkage, shifter, clutch kit. Trannies usually run around $1000-1,500 OEM style clutch kits usually run in the range of $400-500 Shift linkage on this is cable, so probably around $50 The shifter itself is around $60 IIRC. Labor will run you pretty good, no idea on how much that would cost. This is just general pricing off what I've dealt with in the past, not specifically for the aveo (other than the shifter). Finding a junked aveo would be your best bet for parts. The transmissions should still be there, since the cars are so new that I doubt anyone's wrecked one yet. Unlike most mid 90s cars now, which usually only have the block left.

anyone know if the d20 is better than the d16? because i want to swap to a manual but if the d20 is stronger i dont want to waste my money now of the manual swap with a d16 if the d20 is better and if ill need it for higher hp
